Learners at Cockshut Hill School, part of the Summit Learning Trust in Birmingham, stepped inside the ‘writers’ room’ to enjoy an unforgettable workshop with the BBC Scripted Drama Department this term.
In what marks a new chapter for Cockshut Hill’s careers programme, the BBC team delivered a 90 minute session about the world of broadcasting, explaining the various jobs and careers available in media, TV and radio, and giving advice on how to break into the industry. This included information and insights into how the sector is evolving, creating new apprenticeship routes, training initiatives and work experience placements for dramatists, with more and more opportunities becoming available.
Learners also heard personal insights from professional writers already working in the industry – as well as entertaining anecdotes about the on-screen worlds of Wolford and Holby.
Marc O’Malley, Acting Principal, Cockshut Hill School, said: “Cockshut Hill offers students stimulating insights into so many careers but this is the first time we have showcased script writing. It was a real eye-opener to learn about the varied roles and routes available for budding storytellers and to set out this exciting career. Who knows whether an Eastenders ‘doof doof da da da da’ cliff hanger will be penned by a Cockshut Hill script writer in the future?”
